With more than 10 years of experience as a professional writer, Megan holds a degree in Mass Media from her home state of Minnesota. After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
With a climate unlike the rest of the United States, the Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the country’s most unique gardens. And while we love the botanical gardens you’ll find across the Aloha State, there’s something so serene about creating your own garden. Whether you want to plant a garden of your own or just want to learn about sustainable gardening practices, a visit to this garden center and nursery is a must.
Nestled on the windward side of Oahu in Kaneohe, the off-the-beaten-path Waiahole Nursery & Garden Center is a paradise for plant lovers.
This family-owned and operated nursery strives to provide sustainable gardening solutions to Oahu’s gardeners and offers a wide variety of garden and farm products — from soils, peat moss, and fertilizers to ornamental plants, fruit trees, and native Hawaiian plants.
Browse an impressive selection succulents, orchids, and even canoe plants such as taro, turmeric, and awa or have their florists help you with an arrangement for any occasion. They specialize in last-minute wedding flowers and the results are stunning.
Not only does this nursery specialize in the sale of aquaponic and hydroponic systems and supplies, but they breed and sell tilapia — both to eat and for your aquaponic systems.
The farm market features a variety of fresh produce, from papaya, bananas, avocado, and pineapple to farm-fresh lettuces, peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, and ginger. If you’re lucky, you can stock up on seasonal fruits, pickled mango, and kimchee.
But that’s not all you’ll find here. Serving sandwiches, wraps, and smoothies made fresh with produce from the garden center, The Garden Bistro is a must-visit if you get hungry during your visit.
Hoping to learn a thing or two? Participate in a vocational training program, enjoy a tour or aquaponic seminar, go on a field trip, or attend a summer camp. You can even earn an aquaponic certificate as an intern.
Don’t forget to wander around their well-stocked boutique, where you can browse locally-made jewelry, apparel, produce and other products — including flavored macadamia nuts from Kauai Coffee Company and pancake mix from North Shore Goodies.
So, what are you waiting for? The Waiahole Nursery & Garden Center is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit their website or follow them on Facebook.
