Skip the coastal drives, mountain roads, and popular hikes for once and instead, and instead check out these six incredible spots covered by a canopy of trees. From eucalyptus trees planted along a remote road on Kauai to a bamboo forest found on a breathtaking Maui hike, you’re sure to find serenity under these six canopies of trees.
Found off Oahu’s Pali Highway near the popular Judd Trail is Nu’uanu Pali Drive, a magnificent winding road that is covered in a canopy of trees, making the drive to the Judd Trail as spectacular as the hike itself… almost. Nestled in the Nu’uanu neighborhood just miles from the city, you’ll feel as if you’re a million miles away from it all here.
The Holo Holo Koloa Scenic Byway serves as the gateway to Kauai's southern shore and is full of magnificent views and gorgeous stops, including Maluhia Road, a stretch of highway covered in a canopy of eucalyptus trees. In Hawaiian, Maluhia translates to "peace" and "serenity," two words that aptly describe your experience on this picturesque drive.
Kapoho Kalapana Road, also known as Highway 137 and more affectionately referred to as "red road," is perhaps the best country road the Aloha State has to offer, even though it is an extremely short stretch of road. Stretching 17 miles from Kalapana to the Kapoho Tide Pools, you will encounter several amazing hidden gems along the way, including this magical canopy of trees.
Once you turn onto Round Top Drive, which connects with Tantalus Drive, you will be met with driveways at impossibly steep inclines, hairpin turns, blind corners, sheer drops into rainforest valleys, and views of the city that cannot be beat. This two-lane, ten-mile loop is one of my personal favorite drives, and one of the best places to get away from the stress of daily life for just an hour. Oh, and the tunnels of trees found along this stretch of winding road are positively gorgeous.
This isn’t your traditional tunnel of trees, but it’s just as stunning. Located in southeast Maui, off Hana Highway and near the Pools of Oheo, is the unforgettable Pipiwai Trail, a four-mile round trip trek that will take you on quite the enchanting journey through a lush Hawaiian tropical rainforest to a towering banyan tree, through a vast tunnel of bamboo, and to two impressive, cascading waterfalls.
Once a bustling highway on the island of Oahu connecting Honolulu to the island’s windward coast, the Old Pali Road has since been replaced. Portions of the former highway still exist, and it has become a popular hiking destination, for the waterfall found off the path, and the enchanting tunnel of trees you’ll walk through along the way.
