For many tourists who visit the Hawaiian Islands from the mainland, there can be a bit of a culture shock upon arrival – especially when it comes to food, customs and our language. After all, Hawaii is the only American state with three official languages: Hawaiian, English and Pidgin. Though born decades ago in Hawaii’s plantation fields, Pidgin was not formally recognized as an official language in Hawaii until last year.
