The Hawaiian Islands are home to countless incredible restaurants, many of which pride themselves on utilizing local produce whenever possible. This unique Kauai eatery takes it a step further, though. Creating unique dishes based on what’s fresh at the local farmers’ market, and using as many Hawaiian-made products as humanly possible, you’ll want to eat like a local at this laid-back Kauai restaurant the next chance you get.
Welcome to The Local Kauai, a charming bar and grill nestled in an under the radar corner storefront in Kapa’a.
The entire establishment is full of Hawaiian touches, and you can feel the Aloha spirit as soon as you walk up to the bar. They even use local fruit as decor!
Start off with one of their signature cocktails. Many of the cocktails on the menu are crafted entirely out of fresh, local juices and Hawaii-made spirits. If you don’t drink alcohol, their local sour sop lemonade, lilikoi juice, and local coconut waters are all quite refreshing.
The menu is in a constant state of change, with new menus reprinted every Thursday, depending on what Erin Keller (the head chef who co-owns the establishment with her husband) can find at the local farmers' markets. It really doesn’t get more innovative, creative, or fresh than The Local Kauai.
Some of the dishes you might find on the menu include sweet corn and queso fresco empanadas, spicy buttermilk fried chicken served with housemade ranch, fish and chips, Kauai deviled eggs, grilled grass-fed steak bruschetta, pan roasted mahi mahi, and more.
You will also find a variety of salads, seafood, burgers, and pizzas. With so many mouthwatering choices, it can be difficult to make any decisions. Luckily, The Kauai Local’s menu is served tapas-style, meaning the dishes are small enough to order several dishes to share with the table. This is one restaurant you’ll want to visit with friends.
Save room for dessert. The salted caramel creme brulee is to-die-for, and the Maui Brewing Co. Coconut Porter Chocolate cake is heavenly, but you can't go wrong with whatever is on special that night.
The Local Kauai is located at 4-1380 Kuhio Hwy., Kapaa, HI 96746, and is open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. They are closed Monday and Tuesday. For more information, visit their website or follow them on Facebook.
