With more than 10 years of experience as a professional writer, Megan holds a degree in Mass Media from her home state of Minnesota. After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
From five-star restaurants along Waikiki Beach to the north shore’s famous shrimp trucks, the island of Oahu is home to countless incredible restaurants. And while I personally love the occasional fancy dinner, you’re more likely to catch us at one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants: Rainbow Drive-In, a true Honolulu classic that has stood the test of time.
Though this classic fast-casual eatery in Honolulu may not look like much, Rainbow Drive-In is famous for its scrumptious plate lunches and local charm.
The open-air eatery opened in the 1960s, and has been serving up loco mocos, teri burgers, hot dogs, chili, fried rice, battered mahi mahi, and other iconic Hawaiian fare.
Always served with two scoops of rice and macaroni salad, Rainbow Drive-In is not for those trying to avoid carbs: the starchy foods are perfect after a surf session, or when you’re just looking for some good, old fashioned comfort food.
The Kapalua eatery does more than food, though - a gift shop where patrons can purchase t-shirts, hats, stickers and other goodies - was opened in 2012. The shop also sells the Drive-In’s famous chili seasoning and rub, pancake mix, and two varieties of Hawaiian-style chili pepper water.
Open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, Rainbow Drive-In serves up scrumptious breakfast, lunch, and dinner foods sure to satisfy even the craziest of cravings for classic Hawaiian food.
Located at 3308 Kanaina Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815, you won’t be disappointed in your visit to Rainbow Drive-In. What is your favorite timeless Hawaiian restaurant?
