When one thinks about Hawaii, there are a few things that undoubtedly come to mind: gorgeous white sand beaches, crystalline turquoise waters, lush jungles, and some of the world’s most magnificent waterfalls. Unfortunately, many of Hawaii’s best waterfalls are only accessible on foot or viewable via an expensive helicopter ride. That is not the case, however, with this stunning Kauai waterfall. Hidden in plain sight, when you’re looking for a waterfall near me in Kauai, then Opaeka’a Falls is a truly magnificent choice. Let’s take a closer look, shall we, and find out why this is one of the most majestic waterfalls in Hawaii?
Located on the Opaeka'a Stream within Wailua River State Park on the eastern side of the Hawaiian Island of Kauai, Opaeka'a Falls is a thing of wonder — and one of Kauai’s few waterfalls that can be seen from the road.
This is such a great waterfall to visit if you have small children that can’t make the trek, or you’re on a time crunch and you need to get in and out quickly.
The 151-foot waterfall cascades over basalt from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and is surrounded by lush, tropical flora.
If you have the chance to see it then, do! It’s a spectacular display of power, and the waterfall is at its most impressive during these times.

Opaeka'a translates to "rolling shrimp" in Hawaiian, a name that dates back to the days when native freshwater shrimp were plentiful in the stream and could be seen rolling and tumbling down the falls and into the churning waters at the base of the falls.
From the highway parking lot, you can admire Opaeka'a Falls, with the Makaleha Mountains serving as a backdrop and tropical birds soaring through the valley below.
The panoramic views are absolutely breathtaking. We adore the sights you can see without ever leaving the parking lot!
It is when you walk on the sidewalk from the parking lot toward the bridge that you will find the best view of the double cascade. We told you there was no hiking required — and we stand by that. This is merely a short walk from the parking lot (and besides, the view from your car isn’t too shabby).
It’s worth the stroll, especially when it means you can get out and stretch your legs. And if you’re on the island, who wouldn’t want to see this waterfall near me in Kauai?
If you cross the road at the pedestrian crossing sign, you will discover an excellent view of the Wailua River.
Wailua River State Park itself is worth a visit if you have the time. There’s no entry fee, but you can book a river ferry to visit the famous Fern Grotto.

The waterfall is at its most beautiful when the sun is shining brightly overhead, giving the water a sparkling quality. Though still impressive, the waterfall is less captivating when it’s cloudy.
This is one beautiful waterfall in Kauai that’s easy to get to, with no hiking required. We think it makes for the perfect quick stop during your stay on the island.
If you’re in Kapaa and looking for waterfalls near me in Kauai, Opaeka’a Falls is located within the Wailua River State Park. Located at Nalu Rd., Kapaa, HI 96746, this is a gorgeous place to spend the day.
