Calling all Hawaii cheese lovers! Though cheese may not be one of Hawaii’s most popular foods, it’s tough to find someone who doesn’t enjoy the delicious taste of cheese. And while you might find a phenomenal selection of different cheeses at your favorite grocery store (we’re looking at you, Whole Foods), there is one incredible spot hiding here in the Aloha State where you can truly indulge your love of all things cheesy. Even if you don’t classify cheese as one of your favorite foods, you’ll want to stop by this incredible dairy farm and creamery.
Welcome to Naked Cow Dairy Farm & Creamery, a unique haven nestled on Oahu’s leeward coast that specializes in making artisanal cheeses, butter, and yogurt. Ready for your taste buds to be blown away? Let’s discover this one-of-a-kind farm sure to delight anyone who visits.
Given Hawaii’s long history of cattle ranching and paniolos, you might expect that cow’s milk would be the primary cheese you’d find throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Naked Cow Creamery, however, is the only dairy that commercially produces cow’s milk cheese in the Aloha State, and we can’t get enough.
While you can find Naked Cow Creamery products across the island, this artisanal cheese will always taste better when it’s enjoyed on the farm from which it was produced, so why not book yourself a farm tour?
On the tour, you will have the opportunity to feed, interact, and learn about cows and chickens in addition to participating in a cheese and butter tasting. Guests also have plenty of time to hang out with all of the animals that call this farm home, including sheep, turkeys, goats, ducks, geese, parrots, and even a horse!
Farm tours are available every Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and cost $20 for adults and $15 for children. Those under the age of two get in free. Dairy products and ice cream are also available to purchase during these tours.
And if that’s not cheesy enough, you can even live out your cheesiest dreams with a hands-on cheesemaking class! Classes are held on Saturdays in Waianae and Thursdays at Our SALT in Kaka’ako, and participants will learn the entire process from beginning to end, followed by a wine and cheese tasting.
Why not try something new and indulge in a Hawaiian Chili Pepper Havarti or a Wasabi Furikake Fromage Blanc? There is even a Hawaiian Honey and Coffee Rind Cheese — delicious!
In addition to their mouthwatering cheeses, the Naked Cow Creamery, which was opened in 2007 by two sisters, is also well known for their all-natural butters and yogurts.
If you can’t make it to the creamery for a visit, you will find many of Naked Cow’s cheeses used in restaurants and sold to the public at local Whole Foods locations as well as neighborhood farmers’ markets.
Naked Cow Dairy Farm & Creamery is located at 86344 Kuwale Rd., Waianae, HI 96792, and is only open to the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information on their farm tours and cheesemaking classes, check out their website.
Want to discover more mouthwatering cheese made right here in Hawaii? Head on over to the slopes of Mount Haleakala where you will find Surfing Goat Dairy, a goat farm that makes the most scrumptious goat cheese you’ve ever tasted.
