After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
From remote colored sand beaches and volcanic landscapes to bamboo forests and enchanting caves, the Hawaiian Islands are home to more unspoiled natural beauty than you’ll find anywhere in America — or even the world. And while there are countless wild and beautiful places scattered across the Aloha State, the dirt road that leads to the highest point of Lanai might just be one of the most underrated.
If you want to truly get away from it all, this is your chance.
The Munro Trail might just be the most popular trail on the small island of Lanai, and with views like this, it’s easy to see why.
Located just north of Lanai City, past the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, The Lodge at Koele, this 12.8-mile total, one lane dirt road leads adventurers of all kinds to Lanaihale, the highest peak of the island, at an altitude of 3,366 feet above sea level.
The trail begins at the Lanai Cemetery and takes visitors through valleys and past lower mountain peaks. Along the way, you can stop at various lookout points, including the mystic Maunalei Gulch and the distant Hookio Ridge.
Once you reach the summit, you’ll be amazed. This is the only spot in the state from which one can see five other Hawaiian Islands — Maui, Molokai, Kaho’olawe, Oahu, and Hawaii Island — only on a clear day, though, of course.
Make sure to allocate plenty of time to complete the trek and take in the views. Vehicles can expect to be busy for two to three hours while hiking the Munro Trail is an all-day affair.
Because the Munro Trail is located in the center of the island, it can become impassable due to rain, so it’s important to check with a knowledgeable local or your hotel concierge before heading out.
If you choose to hike or bike the Munro Trail, make sure to pack plenty of water, comfortable clothing, and a good camera — this is one experience you won’t want to forget.
Address: Palawai Road, Lanai City, Lanai, HI, 96763
