She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
The Hawaiian Islands are home to 750 miles of stunning coastline — putting the island state behind Alaska, Florida, and California when it comes to coastline length. And while among that coastline you will find countless rock formations and sea cliffs, the breathtaking beaches are what truly matters. It’s true that beaches in the Aloha State come in a variety of colors, but this white sand beach might just be the prettiest in all of Hawaii.
Nestled within Kekaha Kai State Park along Hawaii Island’s Kona Coast surrounded by rugged lava coastline, Kua Bay — also known as Manini’owali Beach — is a stunning stretch of sand that looks like it was plucked straight from the pages of a travel magazine.
Often considered to be one of the island’s best beaches, there’s certainly something special about Kua Bay’s ultra-fine, white sand and pristine turquoise waters that sparkle in the sun.
Swimming and snorkeling are popular in the calm summer months, though the shore break can be powerful and dangerous and there are days when novice swimmers shouldn’t enter the water.
It’s what makes this spot popular among surfers and bodyboarders looking to catch some waves. Just make sure you check the surf report before you visit.
The water within the bay is not only crystal clear but is also teeming with marine wildlife. In addition to tropical fish, you might get the chance to swim with sea turtles or even dolphins.
This sunny stretch of coastline features very little natural shade, so make sure you have plenty of sunscreen, water, and perhaps an umbrella if you’re looking to spend the entire day here.
A few shaded areas with picnic tables are found above the beach near the entrance, as well as bathrooms and outdoor showers.
Marking the northern end of Kekaha Kai State Park, access to Kua Bay is easy: from the main highway, take the 1.5-mile road that leads to the parking lot.
These cotton candy-colored skies take our breath away every time.
