Is there really anything better than a thick, juicy steak and delicious sides enjoyed with your favorite people? From laid-back to formal, and from traditional to steak with an island twist, Hawaii’s steakhouses are as diverse as they are delicious. And while these steakhouses are all sublime in their own way, there is one scrumptious steakhouse hiding in the middle of nowhere on the island of Maui you’ll want to visit: the Makawao Steakhouse.
Located in upcountry Maui on the rural northwest slopes of Mount Haleakala is a charming little town in the middle of nowhere totally worthy of a visit. With a population of approximately 7,100, Makawao is one of Hawaii’s biggest little towns. The town is famous for its Hawaiian cowboy, or paniolo, history, and is home to an incredible steakhouse that is, quite simply, the embodiment of Makawao’s spirit.
The Makawao Steak House has a long history in this community. It was originally opened in 1927 as a fish market, but by 1982, it had taken on an new persona as the Makawao Steak House. While the name has stayed the same over the last several decades, the steakhouse had a change of ownership in 2017, and you’re going to want to visit now more than ever.
Hōkū Nui Maui, a local land management group focused on the environment and sustainability, took ownership of this stellar steakhouse less than a year ago and has made progressive changes, including a renewed focus on incorporating products from their farm and other local farms as well.
Other entrees include braised lamb shank, shrimp linguine alfredo, a classic burger, calamari steak, local fish special, and oven-roasted chicken, pictured below.
We hope you saved room for dessert. A slice of lilikoi or white chocolate raspberry cheesecake is the perfect complement to any meal at this incredible steakhouse.
With incredible food and an Upcountry ambiance, this could easily be one of the best steakhouses on earth. So, sit back, relax, order a drink, and enjoy a mouthwatering meal at Makawao Steakhouse. You won't be disappointed.
The Makawao Steakhouse is located at 3612 Baldwin Ave., Makawao, HI 96768, and is open from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The steakhouse is closed Mondays. For more information, visit their website.
