Celebrating Christmas without snow or cold weather may seem weird for some, but it’s normal practice in Hawaii, and we certainly make up for a lack of snow with incredible Christmas displays, light parades, and celebrations sure to put even the most Grinch-like people into the holiday spirit. While the Hawaiian Islands as a whole celebrate Christmas beautifully — from snowmen made out of the sand on Kauai beaches to the snow-topped Mauna Kea on Hawaii Island — there are a few Hawaiian cities and towns that are a little merrier this holiday season, including the twinkliest town in the Aloha State, Lahaina.
Lahaina is one of Hawaii's greatest seaside towns and the original seat of Hawaiian royalty. The town was often considered Kamehameha the Great’s historically famous "royalty playground," and is now full of old world architecture from the town’s plantation era.
Nestled between the West Maui mountains and the shimmering Pacific on the northwestern shore of Maui, Lahaina is not only one of Hawaii’s most picturesque and historic towns, but one of the most festive as well.
...the best Christmas light display is definitely at Banyan Tree Court. Every December for nearly 20 years, this massive banyan tree is covered in thousands of colored lights, making for one magical experience.
The Lahaina Banyan Tree is the largest banyan tree in Hawaii, and one of America’s largest as well, with its trunk and aerial root system covering 0.66 acres. The seedling was approximately eight feet tall when it was planted in 1873.
Today, the massive tree is an attraction in itself year-round, but nothing says it’s Christmas quite like the lighting of this grand banyan. Though the official tree lighting has already passed this year, you can visit throughout the holiday season to experience the enchantment for yourself.
Whether you bring the entire family or stop by with your significant other after dinner on Front Street, the ambiance of this can't be denied. Even Grinches will love staring in awe at the magical lights adorning the massive banyan.
We guarantee you've never seen a Christmas Tree quite this magical before. If you've never been before, what are you waiting for? Now is the time to start a new holiday tradition.
The Lahaina Banyan Court is located at 671 Front St., Lahaina, HI 96761. Have you ever witnessed this massive banyan decked out with thousands of holiday lights? What about one of our all-time favorite holiday displays, the Honolulu City Lights?
