After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
With approximately two-thirds of the Hawaiian population residing in the consolidated Honolulu City and County, the islands are home to countless charming small towns. These small towns are full of old-world Hawaiian charm, history, adorable shops, and are often in rural locations. While we love all of Hawaii’s towns regardless of size, there’s certainly something special about the tiny town of Kula.
Stretching across the area known as upcountry Maui on the western slopes of Mount Haleakala, Kula is a census-designated place that is primarily home to Hawaii locals who prefer to live away from the island’s tourist centers. The residential area is home to a population of approximately 6,400 and lies between 1,600 and 3,600 feet in elevation.
The word Kula translates from Hawaiian to “open meadows,” and is a perfect description of the serene natural beauty you’ll find in this area. From an organic vodka distillery to charming gardens and everything in between, there’s something for everyone here in Kula.
If you want to get away from it all, Kula is the perfect place to do so. The perfect weekend escape in Kula starts with booking a room at the Kula Lodge.
This rustic, natural-wood lodge is the perfect place from which to explore both upcountry Maui and Haleakala National Park. Because it was built as a private residence, you will find only five rooms at this Maui destination, and dates book quickly due to its proximity to sunrises at Haleakala (the summit is just 21 miles from the lodge).

Bask in the area’s natural beauty at O’o Organic Farm, Harold Rice Memorial Park, or our personal favorite, Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm.
Whether you enjoy adventure or relaxation, Kula will make you feel as though you’re a million miles away from it all, and there is truly no better weekend escape in the Aloha State.
