With more than 10 years of experience as a professional writer, Megan holds a degree in Mass Media from her home state of Minnesota. After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
With approximately 750 miles of stunning coastline, there is absolutely no doubt in our minds that the Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the world’s best beaches. And while you can find many of these stunning beaches nestled on the side of the road, clearly marked and with dedicated parking lots, we prefer the off-the-beaten-path gems. This incredible, hard-to-find trail, for example, takes adventurers on a short, shady path through the forest to not one, but two beautiful beaches — and that’s not all you’ll discover on this epic trail. Grab your beach bag and let’s explore!
Turtle Bay is home to more than five jaw-dropping miles of coastline as well as 12 acres of coastline crisscrossing the resort grounds, including this short trail.
These trails are perfect for running, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and even Segway touring, but we prefer a simple leisurely stroll from the entrance found on the side of Kamehameha Highway that leads hikers on a ethereal adventure through the forest.
Not only is this expanse of multiple trunks and vines routinely used as a filming location for major motion pictures and television shows like Lost and Pirates of the Caribbean, but it’s quite beautiful as well.

Soak in the magic, and then make your way to Kawela Bay. Backed by coconut palms and ironwood trees, this curved bay is one of the most protected on Oahu’s north shore and is perfect for a leisurely swim.
Marine life is plentiful within Kawela Bay, but loose sand makes visibility low and rocks on the surface make this an excellent floating location as opposed to snorkeling and wading.
The surf here is larger, so it’s up to you where you want to lay out your beach towels and make a splash.
But we’re not finished: in addition to two breathtaking beaches and a beautiful banyan tree, you’ll stumble upon a piece of history. At the end of the point, you will discover this pillbox used for surveillance during World War II.
You’ll find the entrance to the trail across the street from Kahuku Land Farm. Park on the side of the road, and don’t leave any valuables in your car as break-ins are common.
Have you ever explored this stunning trail system on Oahu’s north shore before? Which of these two beaches is your favorite: Kawela Bay or Hidden Beach? If not, what are you waiting for? This paradise is just begging to be visited!
