After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
If there’s one beverage Hawaii is known for, it’s coffee. After all, Hawaii is the only American state with land able to grow coffee. While we love visiting the Big Island’s famous Kona Coffee farms as much as the next person, the largest commercial coffee orchard in the Aloha State isn’t found on Hawaii Island’s Kona Coast but instead on Kauai’s southern shore. That’s right, the largest commercial coffee orchard not only in Hawaii but in the United States is the Kauai Coffee Company — and you can visit for yourself.
If you love starting your morning by sipping a cup of Hawaiian-grown coffee as much as we do, you’ll want to plan a visit to the incredible Kauai Coffee Company.
Nestled on the southern shore of Kauai in Kalaheo, the Kauai Coffee Company opens its doors to locals and tourists alike as the island’s premier coffee destination. The Visitors Center is open daily, and there is little better than stopping here for a self-guided tour and as many coffee samples as you’d like.
Learn all about how this delicious coffee is grown, harvested, and roasted right here on the island on a free walking tour of the orchard. Tours are offered daily at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. and there is no need to sign up.
If you missed one of the guided tours, you can also embark on a self-guided walking tour that takes the same path. Read all about the coffee process — from blossoming to final roasting — and take in the jaw-dropping vistas of the plantation, full of coffee trees lining picturesque fields down towards the Pacific Ocean.
But that’s not all: the Kauai Coffee Company also offers 2-hour tours Monday through Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. Board Kauai Coffee’s open-air truck and bump down the red dirt roads of the coffee plantation, through four million coffee trees.
Learn everything there is to know about coffee growing, harvesting, and manufacturing from seed to cup as you are guided down roads only traveled by harvesters. You’ll even get to plant your very own coffee tree in the orchard, and the tour will conclude with a cup of fresh, delicious coffee.
Before or after your tour, relax on the lanai with free samples. This is one of the few places in the world where you can taste Kauai Coffee Company’s entire line of 100 percent Hawaiian, estate-grown coffees. Samples are separated by roast, with four different tables providing guests with a taste of their flavored coffees, dark and medium roasts, and even decaf varieties.
You can also order yourself a coffee from their cafe. In addition to daily roasts, you can choose from a variety of espresso drinks and foods sure to satisfy.
Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop to stock up on your favorite beans — and some fun souvenirs, of course. Coffee lovers, if you haven't visited the Kauai Coffee Company yet, what are you waiting for?
The Kauai Coffee Company is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for self-guided tours of the orchard, coffee samples, and plenty of beans for sale. For more information, visit their website or follow them on Facebook.
