After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
There is little better than finding fresh fruits and vegetables in Hawaii. Unfortunately, because so much of the food produced in our beautiful state gets exported, the produce we find at grocery stores doesn’t often last too long, considering it has been shipped to the islands. Luckily for us, the Hawaiian Islands are home to some amazing produce farmers and even better farmers’ markets for us to enjoy, including this one-of-a-kind market on Kauai that makes shopping for produce a sport.
With nearly 100 farmers set up, the Kapa’a Farmers Market is home to the largest selection of produce on the island and has made quite a reputation for itself throughout the years.
The market opens with a whistle blow promptly at 3 p.m. each Wednesday afternoon, and resents make a mad dash to wait in line in front of their favorite farm stand. Popular vendors have been known to sell out within just 10 to 15 minutes of opening.
Most vendors are certified organic, and you’ll find both backyard farmers who sell whatever their trees produce as well as a variety of garden favorites and professional farmers who sell the sweetest, juiciest tropical fruit around.
If you want to experience the chaos and abundance for yourself, it’s recommended that you come with bags, plenty of cash, and — if you can — a plan. The entire farmers’ market is set up every Wednesday afternoon on the blacktop lot that provides parking for Kapa’a Town Park.
