A melting pot of cultures, the Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the most unique foods you’ll find in America, and one of the islands’ most iconic dishes is poke. A raw fish salad, poke usually consists of cubed aku (an oily tuna), he’e (octopus), or ahi (yellowfin tuna) marinated with sea salt, soy sauce, sesame oil, limu seaweed, and chili powder. The delicious dish is often served as an appetizer and has been taking over the mainland, though Hawaii obviously still does it best. And today, we’re showcasing an underrated spot that serves some mighty delicious poke, among other tasty things.
Located on the edge of Honolulu’s Chinatown is Kahiau Poke & Provisions, a hidden gem known for its tasty poke, beef jerky, and so much more.
This mom-and-pop storefront has humble beginnings — selling their tasty provisions at farmers’ markets and craft fairs across the island — but as the years have passed, the business created a loyal following and well, now look where they are.
Serving up Aloha and deliciously addictive food, Kahiau Poke & Provisions specializes in — you guessed it — poke, as well as limited-time provisions, including their famous limu kohu chili pepper water and thin and crispy beef jerky.
With five tasty flavors to choose from, the poke is always fresh and caught locally. Will you choose the classic spicy ahi, shoyu, or cold ginger poke? What about their house special, which features a sweet and salty house mix with fresh, local limu seaweed and onions?
Kahiau Poke & Provisions is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. They are closed Sunday through Tuesday.
