Ernest Hemingway once said that, “Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection.” And I think he’s right; but even more perfect is a Hawaiian wine. These five wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms feature wine, and an experience unique to the Hawaiian Islands.
Wines include estate wines, rose ranch wines, and pineapple varieties, and are handmade by the community that has worked at Ulupalakua Ranch for generations. Formerly known as Tedeschi Winery, the vineyard is located 1,800 feet above sea level, and is perfect for a romantic escape or a friendly gathering.

A specialty wine tasting room and store located in Honolulu, Island Mana Wine specializes in dry tropical fruit wines made from Hawaiian fruit – including guava, mango, passion fruit and pineapple wines.

This unique winery is nestled between two volcanoes on lava-covered land that allowed Symphony Grape Vines to flourish. Tropical fruits – like yellow guava or starfruit – are blended with traditional wine grapes to create vibrant wines that capture the Hawaiian spirit. I’m definitely going to have to try their Macadamia Nut Honey Wine.
Opened in 2008 in a small Kailua storefront is Oeno Winemaking. While this little shop is not a vineyard – and does source ingredients from around the world – the wine tastings are wonderful. The owner is laid-back, and you can be as serious or silly about the tasting process as you would like. Fun fact: Oeno is the Greek goddess of wine, who possessed the ability to turn anything into wine.
Located in Kapa’a, Nani Moon is only producer of mead – honey wine – in Hawaii. The owners rely solely on local raw honey, fruits, and spices. With varieties from dry to semi-sweet and fruity to spiced, there is a mead out there for everyone, and every mood; plus, their meads are also free from sulfites and chemical additives.
