After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
Let’s all get one thing straight: there is absolutely no better destination in the world to lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails than the Hawaiian Islands. From coastal trails that feature sweeping panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean to secluded forest trails that will make you feel as though you’ve entered another world, there’s nothing better than a hiking trip in the Aloha State. If you’ve tired of the islands’ most popular trails and are looking for an adventure unlike any other, we know just the place. Nestled in the heart of upcountry Maui, the leisurely Waihou Spring Trail leads hikers on a short and sweet journey through a unique forest and rock maze sure to impress.
Located in Upcountry Maui at the end of Piiholo Road, the trail is located within the Waihou Spring Forest Reserve, a 186-acre slice of heaven that was created in an attempt to protect the source of the Waihou Spring, one of the few perennial springs on the western slopes of Haleakala.
This stunning hike is a perfect example of just how diverse Maui’s topography can be, and it’s almost hard to believe this forest is hiding on a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Gaining less than 600 feet and measuring in at just under two miles, the Waihou Spring Trail is rated as moderate. The upper trail is perfect for families, but today, we're checking out the lower trail.
Oh, and did we mention the absolutely gorgeous waterfalls you’ll find along the way? You won’t want to forget your camera on this hike, that’s for sure.
Depending on when you visit, you might not encounter another soul on your hiking trip. So, be careful, and pack a first aid kit, plenty of water, and a fully-charged cell phone. You might also want mosquito repellent and a camera.
The Waihou Spring Trail is located at 2463 Olinda Rd., Makawao, HI 96768, and is definitely worth adding to your Hawaii hiking bucket list. It’s open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.
