The Hawaiian Islands are easily the single most unique place in the United States, if not the entire world, and that’s not just because it’s a tropical island chain. More than 2,500 miles from the nearest landfall and formed by a series of active volcanoes, the Hawaiian Islands are certainly unique in their geology. For proof, just take a look at Kauai's Na Pali Coast, Maui's Mount Haleakala, or Hawaii Island's Mauna Kea.

From the first Europeans visiting the islands in 1778 and the establishment of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1795 to the monarchy being overthrown and Hawaii’s admittance to the United States of America in 1959, the Hawaiian Islands are steeped in history. And because of that intriguing history, the Hawaiian Islands are home to some truly magnificent historic landmarks.

While there are merits to having four distinct seasons, it is also pretty nice to never have to worry about the weather, because it is always approximately 70 to 90 degrees. If it's raining on one half of the island, you can bet that you can simply move to the other side to find sunshine. Sometimes, though, you might just see some snow in Hawaii.

Hawaii is the only state in America with more than one official language. Many Hawaiian words and phrases are still used today, and when you mix that with Hawaiian Pidgin – an English-based Creole dialect – you’re left with a vocabulary unique to the islands. Hawaii is home to the lowest percentage of white Americans in the country; only 24.7 percent of Hawaii residents are Caucasian, and 38.6 percent are of Asian descent, the highest percentage in the country.

What are some fun facts about Hawaii?  

Who knew Hawaii was such an interesting place to live, visit, and learn about? Okay, everyone, but still! We love some of the fun facts about Hawaii that float around out there; did you know that surfing was invented in Hawaii? Yep. In Hawaii there is Mount Haleakala, which is the tallest dormant volcano on the island, meaning it can – and likely will – erupt again someday, though the last time it erupted was in the 1700s. Hawaii is also the only state in the United States that has not one but two official languages: Hawaiian and English. Oh, and you’ll also hear lots of Pidgin spoken here as well.  

What makes Hawaii special?  

Hawaii is a remarkably special place, and everyone knows it; but what is it, exactly, that makes Hawaii special? Well, first and foremost, its culture is among the most beautiful and fascinating cultures in the world, with endless folklore, Gods and Goddesses, legends, and stories. One cannot simply go to Hawaii and NOT immerse themselves in the island’s culture and stories; it’s so much more than just leis and Luaus. A huge part of what makes Hawaii special is its culture and history; the other is its remarkable geography and geology. It’s easily the single most unique state in the United States, and there are no other states that compare to what Hawaii is.  

Why is Hawaii unique?  

Hawaii is the only state in the United States that was formed entirely by volcanoes and exists in the form of islands. Another reason Hawaii is unique is that it’s home to some of the cleanest, clearest, most pristine beaches in the entire world. Some of those beaches are highly unusual, with black sand, sea glass, shells, and more galore. We strongly suggest everyone visit the most beautiful beaches of Hawaii at least once. Another factor making Hawaii unique is its folklore, culture, and, of course, the amazingness that is Hawaiian food. You will NOT find Hawaiian food anywhere else in the States as you will here, and for obvious reasons. Hawaii is a remarkably unique place, and we love calling it home.
