After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
There is little better than finding fresh fruits and vegetables in Hawaii. Unfortunately, because so much of the food produced in our beautiful state gets exported, the produce we find at grocery stores doesn’t often last too long, considering it has been shipped to the islands. Luckily for us, the Hawaiian Islands are home to some amazing produce farmers and even better farmers’ markets for us to enjoy, including this weekly market tucked away off-the-beaten-path on Hawaii Island.
On Hawaii Island near the rural community of Honoka’a, you will discover the weekly Hamakua Harvest Farmers’ Market.
Founded in order to promote and advance Hamakua agriculture by supporting local farmers, embracing community, and promoting healthy rural lifestyles, Hamakua Harvest provides a whole-systems, integrated agricultural hub, market, and teaching model for the community.
While we love how Hamakua Harvest is helping the community’s desire to maintain its rural lifestyle based on sustainable farming, our favorite thing about the organization is their Sunday farmers’ market.
With more than 20 vendors, visitors will discover everything from fresh greens, tomatoes, bananas, and papayas to locally-sourced jams, honey, coffee, teas, and breads. You can even shop for jewelry, clothing, and holiday wreaths!
In addition to a wide variety of vendors offering fresh, locally-grown produce, unique products, and ono food, the farmers’ market offers weekly entertainment, workshops, and youth-focused activities.
So, what are you waiting for? There's no better way to spend a Sunday morning on the Big Island than with a visit to the Hamakua Harvest Farmers' Market.
The Hamakua Harvest Farmers’ Market is held just outside of Honoka’a at the intersection of Mamane Street and Highway 19 on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, visit their website.
