After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
Many non-locals are surprised to learn that the beautiful Hawaiian Islands are, in fact, hugely agricultural. From sprawling coffee and macadamia nut farms to massive cattle ranches, the Aloha State is home to countless agricultural ventures. While we love the islands’ exotic fruit farms and horse farms as much as the next person, there’s no greater day trip destination than this Maui creamery that specializes in caramel sauces, ice cream, and cheese — all made from goat’s milk!
Tucked away off-the-beaten-path on the slopes of Mount Haleakala in Kula, you likely haven’t heard of the Haleakala Creamery, a goat dairy farm that is as sweet as can be.
Founded by a sweet family who just wanted to make their own ice cream in 2011, the Haleakala Creamery has since grown into a full-scale goat dairy with a slew of unique products.
The five-acre property is not only home to sweeping views of the Maui countryside but more than 25 adorable, friendly goats. The goats are part of the family here, and each one has a name — meet Strongman.
Specializing in handcrafted, small-batch goat milk caramel sauces and “Goatlato” ice cream as well as chevre and other sweets, Haleakala Creamery utilizes on the finest local ingredients found throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
Haleakala’s “farm-to-spoon products can be found at local retailers across the Aloha State, with their caramel sauces available nationwide through their online store. But if you can make it out, we suggest meeting the goats for yourself on a tour.
Offered every Friday at 10 a.m., guests on the exclusive tours will learn all about the family farm, how their products are made, and how the goats are milked. You’ll even have the opportunity to milk a goat for yourself!
In addition to goats, you might get to meet some of the other animals that live here, including working farm dogs, two horses, two mouse-hunting cats, and several chickens. Really, would it be a farm in Hawaii without chickens?
After meeting the goats, you’ll enjoy a tour of the kitchen and a gourmet tasting of Haleakala Creamery’s fresh cheese, ice cream, and rich caramel sauces. Talk about a sweet experience!
So, what are you waiting for? This small, family-owned and operated farm is truly one-of-a-kind and well worth a visit if you can snag a spot on one of their exclusive weekly tours.
Tours of Haleakala Creamery are offered every Friday at 10 a.m. and kept to a maximum of a dozen guests in order to provide a personalized, hands-on experience. Each one-hour tour costs $30 for adults and $20 for children (ages 4 through 12). For more information or to reserve your spot, visit their website.
