After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
The Hawaiian Islands are home to countless incredible animals, as well as a variety of places all animal lovers should visit. From honu and the Humuhumunukunukuapua`a to mongoose and wild peacocks, all of Hawaii’s animals are special, but there is one place that is home to some more exotic species.
Located on five acres about Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island, the Three Ring Ranch Exotic Animal Sanctuary is home to more than 100 animals, including flamingos, hawks, owls, turtles, horses, ostriches, and even zebras.
While all of the animals that reside at Three Ring Ranch are cool, there is one extremely special resident that should be noted: Zoe is a golden zebra who is distinguished by gold stripes and blue eyes. She was rescued from Molokai, and was the third reported zebra of her kind throughout history when she was born in 1998.
Founded in 1998, the ranch not only provides rescue and rehabilitation for these animals, but sometimes a forever home for native and exotic species found throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
As Hawaii’s only fully-accredited, USDA licensed, exotic animal sanctuary, Three Ring Ranch is not a zoo - or even a traditional animal sanctuary. The ranch, curated and directed by Dr. Ann Goody, is dedicated to education and animal healing, not the display of exotic animals.
The ranch is unfortunately not open to the public, but private tours and education excursions can be scheduled by emailing visit@threeringranch.org. To learn more, visit their website.
