After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
Located along Oahu’s southern shore is perhaps one of the most famous beach vacation destinations in the world: Waikiki. And while tourists in this 3.4-square-mile neighborhood typically outnumber local residents more than three to one, that couldn’t be further from the truth given the COVID-19 pandemic that has caused Hawaii’s tourism industry to all but shut down.
In fact, Waikiki is as empty as we’ve ever seen it, as evidenced in this drone footage from Youtube user Just Be Out.
Thanks to both a mandatory quarantine for all incoming airline passengers to Hawaii as well as a shutdown of all county beaches and parks, Waikiki is relatively empty in this drone video taken in late March 2020.
But right now, in the midst of a global pandemic, Waikiki Beach looks pretty different. While there are still people hanging out on the shore and in the water, they look to be at least six feet apart — something we’ve rarely seen on the shores of Waikiki in the past.
Whether you’re daydreaming of your next Hawaiian beach day or are in need of a break from the news, this stunning drone footage will not only show you Waikiki as rarely seen before but allow you to take a mental break and relax a little.
