From underrated eateries to upscale, oceanfront restaurants, the Hawaiian Islands are home to countless incredible restaurants that are loved and frequented by many. While it can be easily argued that the most important aspect of a restaurant is the food, ambiance also plays a role. Even better are restaurants that have the whole package — good food, stellar views, beautifully-decorated interiors, and an unforgettable experience. And luckily for you, today, we’re featuring a restaurant with it all.
Welcome to Eating House 1849 by Roy Yamaguchi, a stunning restaurant that not only serves up some mouthwatering meals but pays homage to Hawaii’s heritage. Today, we’re checking out the Koloa location, but you will also find restaurants in both Waikiki and Kapolei on the island of Oahu.
The story goes that, back in the mid-1800s, restauranteur Peter Fernandez opened one of Hawaii’s first restaurants, using what was available from local farmers, ranchers, foragers, and fishermen. Roy Yamaguchi’s Eating House 1849 pays homage to the Aloha State’s vibrant culinary heritage by blending the simple flavors and casual ambiance of a plantation town with modernity of haute cuisine.
The result is a one-of-a-kind dining experience you won’t want to miss. From the gorgeous, beach house inspired exterior to the casual and elegant interior that will make you feel right at home, Eating House 1849 is, to put it simply, drop-dead gorgeous.
Enough about the ambiance: let’s talk about the food that draws influence from Filipino and Portuguese flavors as well as Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Hawaiian cuisines.
The diverse menu starts with the pupus, or appetizers. From chicken wings, pork and shrimp potstickers, lumpia, and poke to pork belly, crispy fried cauliflower and brussel sprouts, and calamari, you’re sure to find something your entire party will enjoy sharing.
Whether you prefer your meal come from land or sea, there’s plenty to choose from here. Island Ahi, Wild Scottish Salmon, Snapper, and Tiger Shrimp are excellent for seafood lovers...
...while carnivores will drool over the kalbi ribeye steak, fried chicken, mustard grilled beef short ribs, and the "Hapa" burger, which is made with Makaweli beef and Kulana wild boar.
Oh, and did we mention the stunning views of the vast Pacific Ocean? With gorgeous views, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and mouthwatering dishes, you absolutely must add Eating House 1849 to your dining bucket list, and while we're obsessed with the Koloa location, the other two are worth a visit as well.
