Although one could easily worship outside in the breathtaking nature of Hawaii, a more traditional setting can be pleasant too. Thankfully, Hawaii has many chapels that are not only rich in history but are made up of beautiful architecture able to catch anyone’s eye. Even if you don’t consider yourself a religious person, these gems around the islands are worth checking out. One of our favorites is The Cathedral of St. Andrew located on the island of Honolulu. Let us tell you why.
Construction on The Cathedral of St. Andrew in Honolulu, Hawaii began on March 5th, 1867. It is located near Queen Emma Square, in the heart of the city.
The Cathedral of St. Andrew was designed by architects from London named William Slater and R.H. Carpenter. Though they were British, they designed the church with a French Gothic architectural style.
In the pool below the statue of St. Andrew are 10 bronze fish. This is a reference to Matthew 24:14 and 28:19 which reads "Go ye into the world and preach the Gospel to every creature." You can find this engraved on the stone wall which wraps around the fountain pool.
Throughout the years, the church has had many updates to keep it in working order. However, you can still feel the historical presence lingering within.
The Cathedral of St. Andrew has worship services available in both English and Hawaiian. So if you’re looking for another way to be introduced to the culture, attending a Hawaiian service is truly a unique experience. Currently, they are offering five services a week. Some of these services are in-person, but others, because of pandemic protocols, are virtual. Have you ever attended a service at St. Andrew Cathedral?
