Is there really anything better on a hot, summer day than a scoop of homemade ice cream? Sure, there’s shave ice, but sometimes you just need to satisfy a craving for creamy, delicious ice cream. While ice cream served from tiny, unassuming storefronts is divine, sometimes we can’t help but crave ice cream mochi from Bubbies Homemade Ice Cream and Desserts. Whether you’ve lived in Hawaii your entire life or just a few months, you’ve undoubtedly experienced the magic that is Bubbie’s, and if you haven’t, well, what are you waiting for?
First opened in 1985 just a few blocks from the UH Manoa campus was Bubbies Homemade Ice Cream & Desserts, named after owner Keith Robbin’s grandmother, who introduced him to the world of ice cream during his childhood in New York State.
Back then, the ice cream was made one flavor at a time with over-the-counter, single-cone options. Soon, word spread of these amazingly smooth frozen creations and Bubbies quickly became a local favorite and is now a household name — even beyond Hawaii.
But, just when Hawaii thought it couldn’t get any better, Bubbies began to focus on mochi, a Japanese-inspired dessert — sweetened rice flour dough formed around a bite-size ice cream filling.
Utilizing natural local ingredients and island-inspired flavors, there’s something for everyone at Bubbies — from truly unique flavors like azuki bean, guava, green tea, lychee, and li hing mango to standard offerings like strawberry, blueberry, vanilla, and chocolate.
The chocolate offerings are particularly sweet: chocolate is combined with strawberry, espresso, peanut butter, mint, and even coconut. You’ll even discover a variety of seasonal flavors, including pumpkin spice, chocolate eggnog, gingerbread, and peppermint candy.
While you can expect to find Bubbies ice cream mochi in stores throughout Hawaii, the United States, and even internationally, there’s nothing better than heading to their storefront in Hawaii Kai to sample the best desserts ever created.
Bubbies Homemade Ice Cream and Desserts is located in the Koko Marina Shopping Center at 7192 Kalanianaʻole Hwy. D103, Honolulu, HI 96825, and is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. You can also find mochi ice cream in Hawaii at Whole Foods, Safeway, and the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. For more information, visit their website or follow them on Facebook.
