After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
Barbecue isn’t merely smoked meat topped with a tangy sauce – at least not here in Hawaii. You see, it also includes grilled meats, and reflects our islands’ diverse landscapes, with Japanese, Korean, local, and traditional American influences. While you’ll find countless delicious barbecue joints across the Hawaiian Islands, there is one barbecue restaurant you won’t want to miss.
Located out in the boonies, on the northeastern tip of Oahu, more than an hour away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, is HI-BBQ, a mouthwatering food truck. Let’s take a look:
For the best slow-cooked barbecue on the island, look no further than HI-BBQ, a patriotic food truck nestled on a hillside far away from Honolulu. Found in the small island community of Kahuku, where food trucks nearly outnumber full-time residents, HI-BBQ is truly a step above the rest.
Their delicious smoked meats are served Hawaiian plate lunch-style and feature your choice of pulled pork, brisket, or ribs, as well as rice, bacon and brown sugar-infused baked beans, and either their signature Siracha coleslaw or house-made sweet apple coleslaw.
In the area before lunch? Try one of their new breakfast burritos, made with brisket, bacon, or pulled pork as well as house-made hash browns or rice, cheddar cheese, and a side of organic salsa. We suggest ordering the Loco Moke-a-rito, a unique twist on one of Hawaii’s most classic foods.
Served in styrofoam containers with bags of chips and soda cans, this roadside BBQ joint may not look like much, but we can guarantee that the food is worth every penny. Though, to be fair, you won’t be spending much either.
(Pictured above is their pineapple sausage, which is occasionally served from the food truck. Follow their Facebook page for information about their specials.)
Located 1.5 miles east of Turtle Bay Resort, you will find signs mark the "Driveway - Cane Haul 7." Turn here, and make your way to the food truck parked at the top of the driveway. The views from up here aren’t too shabby, and you’ll love looking out over the ranch and the Pacific while you enjoy your meal.
You might also find HI-BBQ parked on Kamehameha Highway in Haleiwa.
HI-BBQ is located at 56-970 Kamehameha Highway in Kahuku and is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit their website.
Craving fresh veggies or a salad instead of slow-cooked barbecue? Head across the island to another one of our favorite remote restaurants, Kahumana Organic Farm & Cafe.
