After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
With approximately 750 miles of stunning coastline, the Hawaiian Islands are world famous for their crystalline, turquoise waters and pristine white sand beaches — and while there are too many beaches to name that share these features, there is one particular beach that stands out above the rest. This hidden beach located near Oahu’s southeastern point is home to the most brilliant blue waters.
Welcome to Makapu’u Beach, a stunning slice of paradise with sparkling blue water, fine white sand, and some of the island’s best scenery.
While many people view Makapu’u Beach from either the Makapu’u Lookout or the summit of the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail, few visit the stunning beach nestled at the base of the sea cliffs. Trust us, though: this is one of the island’s best beaches, and you absolutely must visit.
As you look into the vast Pacific Ocean, you’ll be mesmerized by the sparkling blue water, but take a closer look: the views of the offshore Rabbit Island and the Makapu’u Lighthouse are hard to beat.
But be warned — rip currents and a dangerous shorebreak make this a destination better suited for body boarders and body surfers than novice swimmers. It’s also an excellent spot to simply admire Hawaii’s natural beauty and soak up the sun.
The waves are calmer in the summer than in the winter, but we won’t lie to you and say you’ll have a leisurely swim at Makapu’u. Quite the contrary, in fact, as this beach is most popular among adventure seekers.
Fun fact: The width of the Makapu’ Beach varies throughout the year. High surf in the winter months erodes the beach and exposes large boulders in the shorebreak.
Don’t forget to snap a few photographs before you leave! With crystalline water contrasting with the fine white sand, vibrant sea cliffs, it doesn’t get prettier than Makapu’u Beach.
Makapu’u Beach is located at 41-95 Kalanianaole Hwy., Waimanalo, HI 96795.
