I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
The Hawaiian islands are known for growing tropical fruit like bananas, papaya, and pineapple, but there’s something especially fascinating about visiting a farm that grows exotic dragon fruit. Maui Dragon Fruit Farm is a gorgeous 27-acre plantation located close to Lahaina between the mountains and ocean and this is a place you will want to get lost in.
Maui Dragon Fruit is an organic farm as certified by the USDA. From the gorgeous property, you will be treated to both sweeping ocean and epic mountain views.
On the plantation, 16 varieties of exotic dragon fruit are cultivated, along with several other tropical fruits including mango, guava, starfruit, soursop, and sugarcane.
Hour-long tours are offered with a guide who will teach you all about the agricultural history of the island, organic farming, sustainability, and how the dragon and other tropical fruit are grown.
Also included in the tour is a tasting of freshly picked fruit from the farm. If you've never had dragon fruit before, the exterior is bright pink that, when cut open, reveals a white interior speckled with tiny seeds much like a kiwi. The taste is actually similar to that of a kiwi mixed with pear or watermelon.
In addition to the guided tour, you may choose to participate in one of the family-friendly activities hosted on the farm by Paradise Eco-Adventures. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the exhilerating zipline flying above the dragon fruit fields or rolling around in an aquaball on the ground.
