There aren’t many places in the world that are as beautiful as the Hawaiian Islands, and the Hawaii’s Hana Highway on Maui takes you through some of the most break-taking spots you can travel to. You’ll curve around cliffs, pass by towering waterfalls, and soak in ocean vistas that make you feel like you’re in a fairy tale. It’s easily one of the most scenic drives in Hawaii. This relatively short highway, spanning only 65 miles, feels like it’s taking you to another world. This incredible place winds through some of the most remote parts of Maui.

Many parts of this winding mountain road narrow to just one lane as it passes through one of the undeveloped areas on Maui. The road twists and turns around the sea cliffs as powerful ocean waves create a misty spray.

The views along the road to Hana are breathtaking and well worth the trip, especially as you pass over old bridges and through tropical rainforests.
The weather is so wet that you can be sure to experience a rainstorm or two along the drive, so if you’re driving a convertible, plan on getting a little damp or drive with the roof up. Some jokingly call the road “Divorce Highway,” as couples that travel it may have enough adrenaline pumping that the arguments may get a little heated.
The busy Hana Highway may be better seen on one of the many tour buses or vans that travel along the route, and this allows you to soak in the views without worrying about the drive.
The entire drive can take up to 10-12 hours, so plan to spend the night at a vacation rental in Hana or camping in the local campground. But the road isn’t considered dangerous as long as you follow the speed limit and respect the other drivers on the road. If you need a break or want to take a picture, pull over on one of the many pullouts along the way.
