After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
Whether you’re headed to Hawaii for a week-long vacation or you’ve lived in the islands for years, there are certain Hawaiian flavors you’ve probably fallen in love with, many of which are served at this newly opened sweet shop in Honolulu that serves up a variety of old-school sherbet flavors sure to make you a little nostalgia.
Welcome to Asato Family Shop, a unique sherbet shop that opened its brick-and-mortar location at the beginning of 2019 after operating on a subscription basis during 2018. While much of the business still runs via subscriptions, the general public can snag these phenomenal treats twice weekly.
On any given day, you’ll find a variety of sweet flavors on the menu here. Classic strawberry, pineapple, and Green River flavors are almost always available, but there are countless others that rotate.
From lychee-flavored Calpico and White Rabbit candy to pickled mango, honey lemon peel, and their wildly-popular li hing float, these flavors will instantly take you back to your childhood.
In total, owner Neale Asato — who has spent more than five years perfecting the flavors and textures of his sherbet and sorbet — has come up with more than 40 flavors of sherbet, from classic like matcha, mango, and passion orange to one-of-a-kind flavors like peppermint hot chocolate, calamansi mojito, chocolate gummy bear, and pink Starburst.
Just be sure to arrive early on the two days a week the shop is open: pints of this addictive sherbet sell out fast — especially the most popular flavors.
Luckily, you can also order 5-ounce single serving cups and check out the other grab-and-go snacks on display at the Asato Family Shop, from candies and cookies to crack seed, kakimochi, and more.
What are you waiting for? With just one visit to the Asato Family Shop, you can consider your sweet tooth — and your desire for feelings of nostalgia — satisfied.
The Asato Family Shop is located at 1306 Pali Hwy., Honolulu, HI 96813, and is open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, visit their website or follow them on Facebook. Address: 1306 Pali Highway, Honolulu, HI 96813
