Malasadas — fluffy Portuguese doughnuts without a hole — are wildly popular throughout the Hawaiian Islands. A crispy golden brown exterior gives way to a soft and chewy inside. Unfortunately, one of our favorite places to get malasadas on the island of Oahu, Agnes Portuguese Bake Shop, closed in 2018 after nearly 50 years in business. But this summer, the malasadas made a comeback at a newly-opened food truck of the same name. To say our mouths are watering at this news is the understatement of the century.
Malasada fans of Oahu experienced a collective loss when Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop closed its doors back in 2018 due to increasing operating costs.
It’s safe to say we missed these tasty treats while they were gone, but no longer will we have to daydream about the mouthwatering malasadas sold here.
Churned out six days a week in a food truck that’s parked down the street from the original Agnes’ location, these malasadas are, in a single word, heavenly.
Whether you order a few single malasadas to enjoy yourself or pick up a dozen or two for your entire office, you won’t be disappointed. Just remember: always purchase more than you think you might eat, because we’re pretty sure you’ll want another one.
Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in a Kailua parking lot and you can learn more on Facebook. Have you enjoyed these tasty malasadas since the food truck was opened? Where do you buy your favorite malasadas in Hawaii? We’d love to hear from you in the comments!
