As it turns out, the state of Georgia holds a lot of world records – and some of those are downright bizarre. Check out this list showing off some of the crazy records this state holds.
1. Longest BBQ marathon (80 Hours)
The record holder of this challenge is Jeff Greeff and the event took place in Columbus, Georgia. The contest was in association with Char-Broil LLC. Greeff cooked 1000 hotdogs, 200 ears of corn, 104 pieces of chicken, 558 burgers, and 526 sausages!
2. Busiest Airport
In case you didn't know, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the busiest airport in the world! We hold this world record with 88,032,086 people flying out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
3. Largest Soda Float
With Georgia being home to Coca-Cola it was only right that we hold this world record of the largest soda float! The float was made by yours truly, Coca-Cola and was hosted at the World of Coke Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. It was 3,000 gallons of vanilla coke and ice cream pumped into a 15 foot glass!
4. The Most Selfies Taken Simultaneously
That's right! We hold the world record for the most selfies! In this recent world record completed just in October of 2014, 2,997 selfies were taken simulataneoulsy by the Scheduling Institute in Atlanta, Georgia.
5. Highest Score for a Non-NFL American Football team
The football team of Georgia Institute of Technology, commonly referred to as 'Georgia Tech' holds the world record for the highest score for a non-NFL football team. On October 7, 1916 Georgia Tech scored 222 points in a game against Cumberland University.
6. 1st General Anesthesia
A Georgia doctor was the first to administer general anesthesia. Dr. Crawford Williamson Long removed a cyst off of a patient's neck on March 30, 1842 in Jefferson, Georgia.
7. Most Attendance at an Olympics Game
The 1996 Atlanta Olympics was a great moment for Atlanta as well as an unfortunate tragedy in the midst of the Centennial Olympic Park Bombing. Despite this, this Olympic event holds the record for most attended with 8.3 million tickets sold.
8. Oldest Living Person in the World
Besse Cooper, a Georgia resident, once held the record for the oldest living person in 2011 before she passed away at the age of 116 in 2012. She was originally born in Tennessee in 1896 and moved to Monroe, Georgia during WWI in search of work as a school teacher. The oldest living person today is Jeralean Talley from Detroit Michigan. She is turning 116 next month.
9. Fastest Mile of Pennies
This unique challenge was accomplished Burnt Hickory Youth Ministry of Marietta, Georgia. They laid down a mile of pennies in 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 9 seconds. They raised 16,000 USD from this event and donated it all to humanitarian aid for Honduras.
10. Most Cars Hurdled in One Hour
You read that right--most hurdled cars! Jeff Clay jumped over 101 CARS in just one hour. The event took place at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on April 29, 1989. The event was a fundraiser for a Kiwanis Club.
