Many people are surprised to learn that we have a wine region in Georgia. The industry is rapidly growing here, and you’ll find a number of great vineyards in the northern regions of the Peach State. Even if you’re not a fan of wine, the wineries themselves are quite fascinating to visit, and they’re often tucked into absolutely stunning landscapes. We may not be as well-known as Napa Valley, but there are so many cities in Georgia wine country that are worth a visit. One of our favorites is the small mountain town of Mountain City. This little Rabun County town has a population of just under 1,000, and between it and nearby Rabun Gap, there are more than enough attractions to make it worthy of a getaway.
Head up as far to the north and as far to the east as you can go without leaving Georgia and you'll be in Rabun County. This is a beautiful area of the state, with tons of mountains and waterfalls.
The area immediately surrounding Mountain City has several extremely small towns like Tiger (population around 500) and the unincorporated community of Rabun Gap.
This part of the state is also known for its wineries, and you'll find plenty of great ones to check out here.
12 Spies Vineyards, 550 Black Branch Rd, Rabun Gap, GA 30568, USA
After you've visited the area's wineries, you'll definitely want to do some more exploring. This is a wonderful region of the state! Black Rock Mountain State Park is one of the most underrated state parks in Georgia.
Black Rock Mountain State Park, 3085 Black Rock Mountain Pkwy, Mountain City, GA 30562, USA
There are several roads in Black Rock Mountain State Park that are open to vehicular traffic, so you don't even have to hike if you aren't up for the challenge.
Another must-visit attraction here is Foxfire. This Appalachian heritage museum offers classes and events on the culture of the Georgia mountains.
The Foxfire Museum, 98 Foxfire Ln, Mountain City, GA 30562, USA
It's home to a recreated Appalachian village of 20 buildings and documents what life in the mountains was like between 1820 to 1940. This fascinating museum in Mountain City, GA is truly like a step back in time.
Rabun County is home to more waterfalls than any other region of the state, and outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of great trails here, either.
