Darien, Georgia is a hidden gem in the heart of McIntosh County, just 50 miles south of Savannah.
With a population of under 2,000 residents, this tiny waterfront town tends to fall under the radar in comparison to places such as St. Mary’s or Brunswick.
As the second oldest planned city in Georgia, it was originally called New Inverness.

The British built the famed Fort King Georgia in 1721 near what eventually would become Darien, and visitors are still able to peruse the spot that was the southernmost outpost for British troops in North America.
Take a drive past Butler Island Plantation, which is a historic spot in town. It was once a former rice plantation fit with a steam-powered rice mill built in the 1850s that guests can still see today.
We also recommend stopping by the Darien-McIntosh Visitor Information Center to have your picture taken with Altie, the famed monster that has been rumored to live along the shores of the town in the nearby river.
