16 Then And Now Photos In Georgia That Show Just How Much It Has Changed

Georgia sure has changed. As one of the oldest and most recognized states in the country, there’s no wonder there is such a rich foundation. But over the years things have evolved. Buildings have been erected, while others have been demolished. General stores became non-extinct in order to let more commercial establishments through. In the words of Bob Dylan, “Time’s they are a’changin'” and we’re here to show you just how much.
In 1872 this drawing of the Port of Savannah was published by Harry Fern in "Picturesque America". As you can seel, there wasn't much in the way of freight and containers. Not compared to now...
How about that? Compare this to the 1872 drawing above. The yard, as well as the ship's containers, are more modernized with A LOT more to store. Yowza.
Built in 1918, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta went through quite a few renovations since. It expanded in 1920, but not quite as much as more recently.
Now, the Federal Reserve Bank sits high and mighty in Downtown Atlanta. Although the view may have changed, the traffic out front seems to be consistent through the years.
This photo, taken in 1937, shows the Old Georgia State Capital. It just so happens that now, this capital building is a part of the infamous Georgia Military College.
The State Capital Building of Georgia is a bit shinier now. Here's a fun fact: It's actually listed as a National Historic Landmark. It's also the primary building for the Georgian government. Tour-time anyone?
What was once a famed stadium right in the heart of Atlanta has now since been demolished. This picture from 1971 shows the stadium then, in all her glory, before being torn down in 1997.
The Georgia Tech Stadium, also known as the Bobby Dodd Stadium, is now one of the largest in Atlanta. Really makes you wonder if they still have the same hot dog recipe as Atlanta-Fulton....
A modern house built in Georgia. This is more the type of home you would see on large plots of farmland or in residential areas. Compare this with the smaller house shown above. Looks a little sturdier to me.
Speaking of farmland, they sure have changed since the 1970s. Most farms in Georgia have become more efficient through industrialization and technology.
Some farmers prefer a tractor over pulling crops by hand any day. But then again, you have those few who still enjoy doing things the old fashioned way.
Here we have the Georgia Army National Guard preparing for a flood. I would say the uniforms seem a tad bit different, don't you think? Seems to me the more modern uniforms are a bit more comfy and certainly more efficient.
Looks a bit more modern, eh? Besides the addition of color, this Governor's Mansion seems a bit more welcoming. And less dusty.
It really is something to see, how much things have changed throughout the years. Some of these photos take us all the way back to the 1800s. Can you imagine what Georgia was like back then?!
