The One Town In Georgia With More Historic Places Than Any Other

There’s no shortage of historic places in Georgia. As one of the original 13 colonies, we have plenty of sites that have existed for hundreds of years. Civil War battles were fought here, we have plenty of colonial homes still standing, and we have a number of museums located in historic buildings. When it comes to cities with lots of historical sites all concentrated in one place, it doesn’t get a whole lot better than Marietta. There are countless old places here, but we’ve gathered up a few of our favorites to share with you:

Marietta Confederate Cemetery, 395 Powder Springs St, Marietta, GA 30064, USA

The Marietta Confederate Cemetery is located right next to the Marietta City Cemetery. It is one of the largest Confederate cemeteries in the country, with over 3,000 soldiers buried there. The graveyard was established in 1863. You can learn more from the cemetery's website.

The Marietta Fire Museum makes for a great family day trip in Georgia. It's perfect for history buffs, as it's got plenty of antique fire-fighting memorabilia that's absolutely fascinating.

Sope Creek Paper Mill Ruins, Paper Mill Rd SE, Marietta, GA 30067, USA

The Sope Creek Paper Mill was once a bustling hubbub of production, but it's now a set of abandoned ruins along a trail. The mill was burned during the Civil War due to rumors that it was producing Confederate currency.

William Root House Museum

The Root House is one of the older homes in metropolitan Atlanta. It was built around 1845 and has been restored to its appearance during that time period, though you'll find plenty of modern touch-screen exhibits. Not only is Kennesaw Mountain one of the most famous Civil War battlefields in the Peach State, it's also among the haunted places in Georgia. It has been designated as a National Battlefield Park and now contains miles of trails, plus educational exhibits that speak to its fascinating history.
