The North Georgia region is just bursting with fantastic small towns to explore throughout the year. Many of us love to travel to this area in spring to see the beautiful wildflowers. Of course, visiting in the summer is also a splendid escape – it’s typically much cooler than the sweltering seasons you’ll experience down south. Even more tourists come here in the autumn. The most stunning fall foliage in the Peach State covers the North Georgia mountains come fall. One season that can sometimes be overlooked here is winter. This is an absolutely gorgeous region, and we’ve got to say, many of these little mountain towns come alive in the winter months. One of our favorite towns to visit during winter in Georgia is the little city of Blairsville, GA. Winter in Blairsville, GA is an amazing season. The town is tucked away at the very northern border of the state and it’s a picture perfect wonderland that’s amazing for celebrating winter in Georgia.
Blairsville, Georgia is the county seat of Union County. Despite this designation, the small town has a population of only around 600. You'd be forgiven for thinking that means there's not a whole lot going on here, but you'd definitely be wrong.
No matter the time of year, the scenery here is second to none. The city is located within the Chattahoochee National Forest, a massive natural preserve that has no shortage of mountain vistas. The downtown area has a quaint small town charm that can be hard to come by nowadays.
This region of the state can be quite rural in areas. Escaping to the North Georgia mountains is a peaceful getaway from city life. A weekend excursion or day trip to Blairsville, GA feels like a trip back in time to simpler days.
If you're a big fan of hiking and the outdoors, Blairsville, Georgia will feel like heaven. There are so many spots here to enjoy a good hike! Blood Mountain is one of the most popular mountains in the region, and at 4,458 feet in elevation, it's quite the challenge to explore.
Note that during the wintertime, roads may sometimes be closed to vehicular traffic if snowfall is heavy or the roads are icy. Always check weather conditions before heading out to the peak.
Fans of Southern cuisine won't want to miss the beloved Sunrise Grocery. This old-time general store has been around for over a century and is a town landmark.
