If you’ve ever gone down a rabbit hole of research on National Park Service-managed sites, you’re aware how seemingly random the different designations can be. National Military Park, National Battlefield, National Battlefield Park, and National Battlefield Site are four different designations given to 25 sites throughout the country. Each marks a historic place where a battle was fought, but there is no actual difference in the titles as far as how they are treated by the NPS. There are nine National Military Parks throughout the country, and one, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, was the first to be designated by Congress. This 9,500-acre site crosses the Tennessee state line. There are several trails in the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, but one of our favorites is the Snodgrass Hill and Glenn Kelly Loop.
