Savannah is one of the most beautiful places in Georgia, and it’s well-known for being an incredibly historic city. After all, it is the oldest European-settled city in the state! While much of Savannah remains charmingly historic, the riverfront area has recently undergone an incredible transformation. Savannah’s beloved riverfront area near River Street is now known as the Plant Riverside District. This was once the Savannah Power Plant, but it’s now been shaped into a sensational entertainment destination. You can find all sorts of fun here, including shops, wine tastings, delicious dining, and so much more. Perhaps the best part of the transformation comes from the power plant itself, which has been restored to its former glory and now is host to a marvelous hotel.
The old power plant in Savannah, Georgia has been transformed from an ugly eyesore into a delightful entertainment block. The Plant Riverside District combines modern elements with unique pieces of the Hostess City's rich history.
The District's original 1912 power plant was restored to all its former glory. The building's iconic twin smokestacks and urban brick exterior are highlighted in the new design.
What makes the preserved historic power plant so unique is the fact that it's got so much going on! Not only does the building house hotel rooms and mixed-use spaces, it is also flanked by restaurants, shops, and so much more.
The power plant has one of the most iconic Savannah backdrops possible: the stunning Talmadge Memorial Bridge. The plant was originally created for the Savannah Power Company. The main atrium used to be a bevy of steel piping, but now you'll find that it's filled with art, artifacts, and historical memorabilia.
The Savannah power plant was decommissioned and left abandoned for many years. It's quite a marvel to see just how far this restoration project has come!
Sleeping, eating, and shopping in an old power plant doesn't sound all that appealing. But when you see just how stunning this old Savannah power plant is now, you'll realize this is one slice of history you do not want to miss.
