The 1970s were a wild time in Georgia. OK, maybe it wasn’t as wild as you may think, but vintage photos that we find today allow us to transport back in time and get a feel for what was going on during that decade. In 1973 there was a massive ice and snow storm that hit Savannah and other areas of the state. Provisions were sent in via air to quickly move emergency power generators, food and equipment to areas in need.

4. First female enlistee in the Georgia National Guard.
Col. Doug Embry snapped this photo decades ago in order to capture the ice that was beginning to accumulate around the headquarters during a historical storm.
This is what movie theaters looked like in 1970s. No flashing lights. No huge posters. What was once a popular movie theater finally closed its doors in 1970. The theater is now known as the Martin Centre and is used for performing arts.
