This secret Tree, Wildlife, and Plant Sanctuary is one of the more noteworthy places in our great state of Georgia. However, it’s often overlooked simply because it’s a hidden oasis that has been carefully tucked away for a few decades now. Thanks to John Ripley Forbes, the beautiful forested land and 200-year-old white oak trees have been preserved in their natural element for residents and visitors to enjoy. And to think, the beauty that is this preserve was in talks to be bulldozed to make way for a car dealership in 1989. Luckily for us, Forbes fell in love with the urban forest, which is now known as Big Trees Forest Preserve.

It’s hard not to fall in love with this quiet, serene landscape and nearly 30 acres of wonderfully preserved, forested area. Despite being so close to the Atlanta metro region, it’s a little slice of natural heaven that makes you feel like you’ve traveled to another state for some much-needed peace of mind.

One of the major reasons why Forbes decided to preserve this pristine land was to create a visual, mental and spiritual oasis open and available to the public. The Forest is open sunrise to sunset, seven days a week, with free parking. They even allow dogs!
