This lengthy road trip requires about 4.5 hours of driving, but, of course, you'll be spending plenty of time outdoors, too. You'll get to hit up some of the most beautiful bodies of water in North Georgia. This is a great adventure for any season, but it's especially amazing when the weather's warm!
Our first stop is the beautiful Lake Burton. The lake's 62 miles of shoreline offer beautiful views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. It's also a perfect place to kayak or enjoy water sports.
Lake Rabun is one of the area's most popular lakes, but don't let that deter you. At over 800 acres, there's a lot of space to spread out here, and you'll enjoy about 25 miles of shoreline. The area is also home to dozens of waterfalls and it's one of the best hiking areas in Georgia.
Lake Lanier is one of the state's most popular vacation destinations, but it's also rumored to be among the most haunted places in Georgia. If you're brave enough to explore the area, it's quite beautiful, with a surface area of 58 square miles. You'll find tons of hiking areas and campgrounds along the lake's shores.
Carters Lake is a massive man-made reservoir along the Coosawattee River that is bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's the deepest lake in Georgia and is surrounded by some magnificent waterfront trails, like the easy 1-mile trail at Ridgeway Park in Ellijay, GA.
Another stunning lake in North Georgia is Lake Allatoona. It's a perfect summer destination thanks to all the opportunities for recreation, and with beautiful parks like Red Top Mountain State Park, there are plenty of phenomenal areas for camping and hiking.
You could just about spend endless time out exploring all the lakes in the state, but this lake road trip in Georgia will at least take you to a few of the most beautiful! What are your favorite bodies of water in the Peach State? Share your thoughts in the comments.
