I’ve lived in Georgia all my life, and I’m always on the hunt for fun new things to experience in the state. I’ve had several family tragedies this year that have had me traveling back and forth from North Georgia, where I now live, to my hometown of Savannah on a regular basis. It’s been an incredibly stressful time and I’m getting pretty sick of that 4-hour drive, but I have to say, getting to spend so much time in the Hostess City has been something of a bright spot. There’s so much to see and do in this amazing city! I’ve heard about smash rooms in other places and the idea was quite appealing, especially with all my recent stressors. A room where you’re given free rein to break whatever you want? Sign me up! I recently had the opportunity to visit Smithereens, a rage room in Savannah, and it was (excuse the terrible pun) a smashing good time. Check it out:
Smithereens opened up in October 2022 in downtown Savannah. It's a small shop, and easy to miss.
The walls are lined with bins filled with liquor bottles, dishware, and small figurines, all ripe for smashing.

I'll admit, I was a little wary about the experience upon arriving. A lot of the figurines were so cute! I'm a huge fan of knick knacks and my initial urge was to protect them, not break them.

Those who are really in need of release can opt for add-on larger items, like washing machines and typewriters.

As you can imagine, a place like this can be quite dangerous, but safety is of the highest priority.

Only those 15 and up are allowed in the smash rooms, and a guardian has to be present. Rules are read aloud before you even get into the smash room. Certain items cannot be smashed for safety reasons, like screens and fiberglass.
You'll also be given a full protective suit to wear, plus a face shield and gloves.

After suiting up and hearing all the rules, it's time to smash!

You'll be given a bin of items to destroy, and then it's time to head into the room.

Smithereens has two large rooms that can accommodate groups of up to seven smashers, plus a small room that can hold groups of four.

Filming inside the room itself is a no-no (actively flying breaking glass and phones don't mix!). However, there's a window outside of each room where observers can watch, and it's got a convenient ledge where you can set your phone and film the entire experience.

You have your choice of several different "weapons," including bats and hammers. Dishes and figurines can be thrown into the wall if you like, but you'll have to use a tool on the liquor bottles, as they are designed to bounce when thrown.
After about 5-10 minutes of smashing, the room looked like this!

I was honestly shocked how much I enjoyed the experience. I am typically pretty mild-mannered and more prone to letting out my emotions via crying rather than rage, so I wasn’t expecting to get a lot out of breaking things. Not only did I have a great time, but I also felt surprisingly lighter upon walking out of the building!
You can get more information about this smash room in Savannah, Georgia from the Smithereens website or Smithereens Facebook page. It’s highly advised to book online, especially if you’ll be visiting on a Friday or Saturday, as those are the busiest days of the week.
There’s no shortage of places to stay in Savannah, and the downtown area in particular has so many great Vrbo vacation rentals! Make sure to check them out when planning your next trip.
