After A Hike Through Georgia's General Coffee State Park, Board The Vulcan Steam Engine At The Georgia Museum Of Agriculture & Historic Village For A Memorable Adventure
One of the original 13 colonies, Georgia is filled to the gills with so many layers of history. For those looking to take a bite of this history, General Coffee State Park and The Georgia Museum Of Agriculture & Historic Village are the perfect places to start.
One beautiful place to witness the landscapes that are foundational to Georgia’s History is General Coffee State Park. Known as one of southern Georgia’s best-kept secrets, this park boasts rich agricultural history shown at Heritage Farm, with log cabins, a corn crib, a tobacco barn, a cane mill, and other exhibits. The park also features a petting zoo, making it a perfect getaway for families.
Be sure to check out Seventeen-Mile River and the boardwalk that winds through the park. These trails give visitors a unique opportunity to see rare and endangered species in the park, especially in the cypress bogs. Pitcher plants, shy indigo snakes, gopher tortoises, and several bird species make their homes in this wiregrass ecosystem, making it a perfect destination for birdwatching and wildlife photography. Be sure to leave no trace in the park to protect yourself and the rare species that take refuge here.
Accommodations in the park include primitive ride-in camps for equestrian campers, drive-in campsites (with water spigots, pit toilets, grills, fire rings, and picnic tables), cozy cottages, and the particularly romantic Burnham House.
Hosting a curated variety of 19th century artifacts and technology, the museum has something to delight just about anyone. Visit the more traditional exhibits in the Ford B. Spinks Exhibit Hall and museum art gallery; have a quiet moment in the Langdale Nature Center, or even take a ride on the only steam-powered train in regular operation in Georgia! Vulcan Steam Locomotive #5 was built by Vulcan Iron Works in 1917 and continues to delight guests with its cheery whistle and journey through the park!
Be sure not to miss the Historic Village at the museum. Here, guests of all ages will be delighted by demonstrations of activities that we take for granted in our modern day and age. Bread-baking, blacksmithing, and more are sure to excite everyone in your group.
