Suffice it to say, there are a lot of well-known cemeteries throughout Atlanta, Georgia, plus many that span throughout The Peach State as a whole. However, Westview Cemetery is perhaps one of the most celebrated, largely due in part to its size and history. Tucked away within the capital city, this is the largest cemetery in the entire Southeastern United States and features plenty of history, plus some mystery thrown in the mix, too.
Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia is massive. We’re talking 600-acres of space, plus over 108,000 people buried there stretching back to the late 1800s.
Founded in 1884, this beautiful gem is the resting place for a lot of people, including famous Georgians like Coca-Cola founder Asa Candler, for instance.
There are stunning gravestones, large, looming vaults, water fountain features, obelisks, and even a mysterious water tower thrown in for good measure.
One of the most historic parts of the entire cemetery is the West View Abbey Mausoleum, which was built back in the 1940s and is still in operation to this day.
The Mausoleum is open to the public, with thousands of tombs, years of history, and is even considered to be the largest structure of its kind ever built under one roof, according to the Westview website.
Touring the grounds will give you a glimpse into the beauty and history of the area and its residents, from the colorful stained-glass window decor in the chapel to the crypt-like hallways.
