Georgia is so rich with history, there are stories in abundance, especially those that tend to give you goosebumps in the night. So plan your next date night accordingly, and check out these haunted restaurants in Georgia.
1. The Shakespeare Tavern—499 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30308
It's been said before that The Shakespeare Tavern is visited quite frequently by spirits. Witnesses have reported disembodied voices, shadow figures and strange lights bouncing about. There also have been a variety of apparitions appearing at random, including a young boy in an 1800s blue velvet suit, an old man in period clothing, and a woman who switches items in the dressing rooms and plays around with props. If you decide to check out a show, make sure you go early for their dinner. Dine if you dare.
2. Public House—605 Atlanta St, Roswell, GA 30075
Here’s the story behind this haunted restaurant: The Public House, which was once known as Peasant Restaurant in the 1970s, was originally constructed in 1854 as a commissary for the old Roswell Mill. It also was a Union hospital during the Civil War. As legend has it, it is also the site of a tragedy, when Michael, a teenaged Union soldier, and Catherine, a Southern Belle nurse met and began to have a forbidden romance. Michael was killed by Confederate soldiers, and rumor has it Catherine hung herself out of grief. It is said that Michael and Catherine both linger in The Public House, playing piano, dancing in the loft, or playing tricks on customers. Figures and light orbs have been spotted, and even a cook reported seeing a ghostly woman walking through the kitchen. Yikes!
3. The Olde Pink House—23 Abercorn St, Savannah, GA 31401
Ahhh, everyone’s favorite haunted restaurant in Georgia, The Olde Pink House. Delicious food accompanied by a to-die-for history. James Habersham Jr., known as a gracious Southern host and generous with his hospitality, died in 1799, just 10 years after he finished his dream home. Since his death, unpleasant occurrences began to happen, including candles lighting on their own, a man dressed in Revolutionary clothing sitting at the bar, and heart-breaking sobs coming from an unknown female. Also keep an eye out for the children that haunt the restaurant. They apparently like to throw dice against the wall and roll wine bottles down the bar.
4. 17Hundred90 Inn and Restaurant—307 E President St, Savannah, GA 31401
Are you looking for the ghost of Anna? Then you’ve come to dine at the right place. The 17Hundred90 is one of the most popular haunted Inns and Restaurants in historic Savannah. The most famed ghost, Anna Powell, fell from the window of room 204 and has since haunted the grounds. Keep your personal belongings tucked away, because the ghost of Powell is said to have sticky fingers.
5. Hot Dog Heaven— 8558 Main St, Woodstock, GA 30188
You probably wouldn’t expect this hot dog joint to be haunted, yet it’s actually one of the more famed of the area. The Main Street Building where the restaurant is housed was once a former Post Office. It’s said that the ghost in Hot Dog Heaven was once the postmaster in the building. Employees have reported strange noises, weird unexplained voices, and flyers being shifted around in the night. If you want to see if you meet the postmaster yourself, head on over for a hot dog.
6. Aqua Terra Bistro—55 East Main St., Buford, GA
This restaurant has been investigated for paranormal activity on many different occasions for more than three decades. Servers have reported mugs flying off the shelves, glasses being pushed off the bar, bright balls of light, and even odd noises coming from dark corners. One morning, a line cook reported seeing an apparition of a woman in a dress walking through the kitchen, then disappearing completely. Dine at your own risk, people!
7. Anthony's Restaurant—3109 Piedmont Road N.E., Atlanta, GA 30305
Unfortunately, Anthony’s is no longer with us. However, the story of this restaurant lives on. The house was originally build in 1797 in Washington, Georgia, then moved brick by brick to Buckhead in the 1960s. Since moving, there had been numerous reports of unexplained footsteps, voices calling out in the night, and shadowy figures lurking in the dark. Some believe these mysterious happenings are the works of Annabelle, the home’s last hostess. We only wish the restaurant was still around so that we can test the ghost theory for ourselves.
8. The Pirates' House—20 E Broad St, Savannah, GA 31401
For many years, The Pirates' House restaurant has been the talk of numerous paranormal sightings. It’s no surprise really, since the building is more than 250 years old. It’s been said that shadows and other ghostly apparitions have been seen walking the dining rooms. Employees have reported feeling someone watching them, or finding seaman from long ago standing still one minute, then disappearing the next. Even patrons reported hearing footsteps echo through the restaurant on quiet evenings. Feeling like you’re up for a ghostly meal?
How many of those restaurants have you been to? Ever experience something otherworldly? We’d love to hear from you!
