We’ve talked about haunted towns, abandoned insane asylums and the unsolved mysteries of Georgia—but have we talked about the actual ghosts that still haunt the state? Those poor, lost souls that will forever wander due to the heinous crimes that happened upon them. Here are five of the most bone-chilling ghost stories of Georgia, and the ghosts that still live them each day:
Many people have spotted a little girl on the property, usually seen inside the attic of the house. She is known to turn the lights on and off at random points of the evening and wander aimlessly, looking out the windows. Employees have tested this theory of a little girl ghost by leaving toys in one particular spot before they leave for the night. When they arrive the next day, the toys will be moved elsewhere.
Many have claimed to see a one-legged man dressed in full Civil War regalia, standing about the grounds in the distance. Nobody has ever gotten close enough to verify who the man is, because he will always disappear. But it is said that if you listen closely, you can hear him moaning throughout the grounds.
In 1896, William Winstead Thomas built a house, which is now called the "wedding cake house," as an engagement gift for his daughter, Isabel, and her fiance, Richard. However, when Richard stood up his bride-to-be at the altar, she hung herself in one of the rooms. Now the "wedding cake house" is home to a sorority, and many sisters have claimed that Isabel still haunts the house, crying and restless, as the bride-never-to-be.
The Surrency Ghost Light is a story of tragedy and heartbreak. One night, more than half a century ago, after a heated argument between a husband and wife, the wife ran blindly out of the house and down the neighboring railroad tracks. She was hit and killed by an oncoming train. It is said that you can still see a light miles away from the lantern of the ghost husband trying to find his dead wife. Some have even spotted a woman with long, blonde hair walking the tracks in the middle of the night crying.
There have been numerous stories of hauntings in The Masquerade Nightclub in Atlanta. The most popular is that of a very large, shadowy black man who is always seen walking around the nightclub. The staff thinks the man haunts the club, creating freak accidents and turning over the amplifiers. They also have reported hearing footsteps from unidentified sources, cold spots and random horrifying screams throughout the building.
Have we completely scared you off? We hope not. Because as scary as these stories may be, they also provide a rich history for our beautiful state.
