Residents of North Carolina and Georgia alike have been following the news concerning the massive wildfires that have been burning for weeks now. These devastating wildfires are predicted to potentially last until early March, and officials now believe they could nearly double in size. Here’s more on why this truly tragic situation could potentially worsen.
The original fire in Georgia was started by a lightning strike and has been burning for over a month. In these past weeks, air quality has been compromised, and the Georgia Department of Public Health has asked residents to avoid any strenuous outdoor activity.
Officials are particularly concerned about the Rock Mountain wildfire in northern Georgia. Following a northeastern path, these flames could potentially double due to the area’s dry and windy conditions. This fire has burned nearly 13,000 ares thus far, with only 30% containment. If conditions continue to worsen, the devastation could reach 30,000 acres.
The Rough Ridge Fire in the Cohutta Wilderness section of the Chattahoochee National Forest has expanded further as well. On Sunday, the flames crossed Rough Creek and have begun burning toward the East Cowpen Trail.

Just 70 miles from this area, the Lookout Mountain fire along the Tennessee border is also growing. No homes have been evacuated yet, but residents are aware of the situation and will be notified should the fire continue to grow.
As has been the case this past month, firefighters are working tirelessly and diligently to protect Georgia’s residents and property. Controlling these fires as much as possible is top priority, and will be until they are contained.

Despite these unfortunate circumstances, we remain hopeful for relief and until then are grateful for the hard work put forth by the brave firefighters and other officials. How has your area been effected by the fires or the smoke?
