When we think about Georgia’s history, it’s hard not to think about the Civil War. Georgia has a lot of stories tied up with this critical time in our country’s history. In fact, one of the most important battles of the entire war was fought right here in Georgia. While you may have heard about the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, you might not know this history behind the mountain forest trail located nearby.

The Union General William T. Sherman launched a major attack on Confederate General Joseph Johnson’s army at this spot in 1864.

Starting in early May, Sherman began a very slow advance 100-miles down from Chattanooga to Atlanta.

Eventually there were many smaller battles and skirmishes, ultimately leading to Johnson loosing ground, that led up to the final battle.
